(What’s the bet that WordPress doesn’t set this as I intend. Ah well, here goes anyway…)
Farewell to Aladdin. By CpSingleton © 2016
Who knew that a cold day in January
Could become much colder at the news.
We don’t need any gentle word play to
Announce your name in lyrics you wrote.
You were the rock chameleon who kept
Everybody guessing when you appeared
On stage or screen. Straight as a tent pole and
Stick thin: you regal alien; Jean genius.
Shit, even Bing Crosby couldn’t resist
Your pull, despite the Christmas jumper and cords.
I remember driving the kids to school,
Them arguing and griping in the back.
All I needed to do was slip on the cassette and
You would brighten them up with Starman.
The irony of the lyrics not lost on me,
As they dropped their angry masks and became
Enraptured in the chorus that blasted
From tiny speakers: played again and again.
So, we say goodbye: the heavens have
Quite an ensemble of the brightest stars
To welcome you to their band of legends.
Goodnight T. W. Duke. Never to be forgotten.
