“What are the different ways to write and why is poetry so difficult?”
Now, I’m no poet king or even writing expert, but if it appeared that the folk attending thought it more a class than a circle, then I could give them some pointers. It’s what I did when I visited the schools in Cumbria.
To be fair, most of the circle just required guidance, but I’d start with answering the question: what is poetry.
I decided I would show three of my own and let them rip them to shit. There would be a serious-Propranolol Nightnares-; a nonsense -Hey Diddle Dum-; and a full on emotional -Don’t You Dare-.
They guessed that the last one MAY be mine. The others shocked them.
We got a good half an hour of question and answer out of the three.
Lauren then came up with a game involving emotion, as a tie in, whereby the circle would pick an emotion out of a hat and write about. A very interesting game indeed!
However, I was still battling my own insecurities and thought I’d lost them as far as the learning side went. I was convinced that I was jabbering at them.
I even went so far as to go home and consider quitting.
Seriously. For no other reason than because I was so out of human touch that I felt I was useless to them.
Now here’s the lesson learned: in between that session and the upcoming -two weeks- I had been invited to attend a national mental health week seminar at Burnley Football club.
It was a chance to network with other groups and organisations tackling mind illnesses.
It was interesting and I met some influential folk.
There I also heard people talking about my lesson and thrn folk came up to me and told me how inspirational it was!
Perceptions of a fractured mind, eh?
Me? Inspirational? Whatever, dude!
Afterwards I had a meeting with Becks and told her my worries and that we should extend it to weekly.
That way nobody -me most of all- wouldn’t become disillusioned with it.
It was decided that at the next session we would ask the group if they would like it weekly.
Also, I wanted to start a project that would pay The Shop back and turn the whole thing more fun based…
